LISA 2020: CREATING A NETWORK OF STATISTICAL COLLABORATION LABORATORIES. Eric Vance, Department of Statistics, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Blacksburg VA 24061. To increase the global impact of statistics as a discipline useful for helping researchers answer research questions, and sponsored by a Google Research Award, LISA—The Laboratory for Interdisciplinary Statistical Analysis at Virginia Tech—is partnering with universities and individuals around the world to create a network of 20 new statistical collaboration laboratories in developing countries by 2020. LISA and its partners will educate and train statisticians from developing countries to communicate and collaborate with nonstatisticians and then support these statisticians to create statistical collaboration laboratories in their home countries to help researchers, government officials, local industries, and NGOs apply statistical thinking and data science to make better decisions through data. At LISA and elsewhere, we will unlock the collaborative potential of technically sound statisticians who will in turn unlock the research potential of their collaborators and teach other statisticians to do likewise. These local research collaborations, now with the power of statistical thinking and data science open to them, will be key to improving human welfare worldwide. This talk will focus on the steps of the LISA 2020 plan, including how LISA trains statisticians to become interdisciplinary collaborators, how statistical collaboration laboratories create knowledge, and how we are building a mentoring network to assist statisticians in developing countries to enable and accelerate research by making statistics more practical in solving real world problems.

Glutathione S- transferases and their function as a protein superfamily in plants

Glutathione s transferase (GST) is one of the largest protein and multigene families present in all plant species and other living organisms. For these proteins, which are highly ‌inducible to stress and internal and external stimuli, several functions in plants have been identified, including implication in secondary metabolism, growth and development, detoxification of herbicides, coping with...

Gene Family: Structure, Organization and Evolution

Gene families are considered as groups of homologous genes which they share very similar sequences and they may have identical functions. Members of gene families may be found in tandem repeats or interspersed through the genome. These sequences are copies of the ancestral genes which have underwent changes. The multiple copies of each gene in a family were constructed based on gene duplicati...

The Effect of the Crocus Sativus L. Carotenoid, Crocin, on the Polymerization of Microtubules, in Vitro

Objective(s): Crocin, as the main carotenoid of saffron, has shown anti-tumor activity both in vitro and in vivo. Crocin might interact with cellular proteins and modulate their functions, but the exact target of this carotenoid and the other compounds of the saffron have not been discovered yet. Microtubular proteins, as one of the most important proteins inside the cells, have several functio...

Divergent evolution in the enolase superfamily: the interplay of mechanism and specificity.

The members of the mechanistically diverse enolase superfamily catalyze different overall reactions. Each shares a partial reaction in which an active site base abstracts the alpha-proton of the carboxylate substrate to generate an enolate anion intermediate that is stabilized by coordination to the essential Mg(2+) ion; the intermediates are then directed to different products in the different...

The Importance of α-CT and Salt bridges in the Formation of Insulin and its Receptor Complex by Computational Simulation

Insulin hormone is an important part of the endocrine system. It contains two polypeptide chains and plays a pivotal role in regulating carbohydrate metabolism. Insulin receptors (IR) located on cell surface interacts with insulin to control the intake of glucose. Although several studies have tried to clarify the interaction between insulin and its receptor, the mechanism of this interaction r...
